Jet setting at the last minute? Get the perfect golden glow with these tanning tips.
If you've got a holiday or party coming up in the next few days, you might panic about your tan. Will it be streaky? Will it last? Will people think that weird tan smell is because you spend most of your time in a tanning booth instead of meeting people?
We can all agree that getting ready for a special event takes more than just slapping on some lipstick and throwing on an outfit. There are many other factors to consider when getting ready to go out - especially if you want to look your best. A new haircut, manicure, and waxing can make all the difference - but what about the tan? Does it have to be such a hassle?
Step 1: Exfoliate and dry off
Before you begin, start with a clean canvas by exfoliating and drying off. Any tanner can look blotchy if your skin is slightly dry or stained, so use a body scrub or loofah to remove any dry patches, followed by a quick pat dry with a towel to ensure your skin is completely dry before you begin. The smaller pores on your hands and feet may not need to be exfoliated as thoroughly as the rest of your body. Make sure you remove any calluses from your palms with a foot file, as well as any dead skin from your fingers and toes.
Step 2: Apply a base tanner
Once your skin is clean, you can begin to apply the base tanner. Make sure the product you choose is designed for the face, neck, and décolletage, as these areas are more delicate and require a softer formula. Always follow the directions on the bottle, and apply the tanner with your hands, palms up, to ensure even coverage. A base tanner is a must, as it will give you a more natural-looking result than a bronzer. It will also help protect you from the sun and make it easier to see where you have applied the DHA.
Step 3: Layer on the DHA
Now that you have applied the base tanner, it is time to add the DHA dihydroxyacetone – the active ingredient in most self-tanning products. Depending on how dark you want your tan to be, you can either apply a light or heavy layer of DHA, but generally you will want to apply a light coat first to help even out the base tan, followed by a heavier coat of DHA for the desired level of darkness. Make sure you apply the DHA to your palms as well as the back of your hands, as these areas can become neglected when applying tanner and can turn out patchy.
Step 4: Mask the smell with an essential oil
There is no denying that DHA smells awful. But thankfully, there are ways to mask the smell and make the whole experience less pungent. Try adding a drop of an essential oil to each palm before applying the DHA. We recommend using lavender, eucalyptus, or lemon essential oils as they are known for their ability to neutralize a pungent smell. You can also try applying a scented lotion or spray, but make sure to do this outside as it can leave a mess indoors. Alternatively, you can apply a fragrance exfoliant or body scrub before applying the DHA. This will help to neutralize the smell while also exfoliating your skin.
Step 5: Protect with SPF
Now that you have applied the DHA, the final step is to apply SPF, which will help to protect your skin and extend your tan. A good SPF is non-greasy, oil-free, and water-resistant, which will help it last longer and not wash off as easily when you shower. An SPF of at least 30 is recommended, but if possible, try to find an SPF with added UVA protection to help protect you from skin damage. Now that you know the steps to getting the perfect golden tan at the last minute, you will be well-prepared for whatever life throws your way.
